Susan Adler Paintings

I have always painted portraits, from life as well as from photographs. The challenge is to capture more than a likeness, to capture the character of the subject in a painting that is more than a portrait.

The subject has always been my inspiration, whether an object, a scene, or a person. Unlike many contemporary painters, I have never been able to separate the subject from the formal aspects of painting. The particular way that the subject resonates is the inspiration, and the goal is to capture that on canvas, to create a painting that speaks. I find it difficult to talk about painting, mine or anyone else's. Art is my favorite language. Paintings should speak for themselves.

I work out of a studio in midtown Manhattan.
